Jocko Willink – extreme accountability will change your life.
In all of Jocko’s writings and podcast episodes he encourages us to hold ourselves accountable for literally everything that happens in our life. Whether we initially seem to be at fault for something or not, there is always a host of things that we could have don’t differently. We can always do better.
Taking Full Responsibility Gives Us Power
Holding ourselves accountable means taking full responsibility. Taking responsibility for what happens in our lives gives us power; power in our own lives and power over how we conduct ourselves.
This means taking responsibility for our own emotions, thoughts, words, and actions in the lead up to an event. And for our emotions, thoughts, words, and actions during and after an event. There is always something different we could have done. There are always ways in which we can learn and therefore improve in the future.
What Could I Have Done Better?
When something occurs in your life, especially something bad, it is a great opportunity for learning. You can only learn of you take full responsibility. You are not responsible for the actions of others, but you are fully responsible for your own actions. And your own actions almost always have an effect on the actions of others.
How Can I Improve?
Life is all about learning. Tony Robbins describes the concept of CANI; constant and neverending improvement. Wisdom comes through asking yourself over and over “what could I have done differently?”, “where did I fail to live up to my standards today?”
When Someone Does You Wrong…
When somebody does you wrong it is a waste of time to wallow in frustration or anger. Blaming other people does not benefit or help you in any way. You are not responsible for their actions, but you are responsible for your actions.
Take Control… There Is Always a Way
You never think, speak, or act perfectly. So instead of looking at the bad actions of others, take every opportunity to explore the ways in which you acted imperfectly. Finding your imperfect actions and examining them is an invaluable way to gain wisdom and to become a better version of yourself.
We Will Always Make Mistakes… So Use Them Wisely
Mistakes are a natural part of life. We all make mistakes all the time. By using Jocko Willink’s extreme accountability methods, we wring all of the value out of our mistakes. Mistakes are only bad if we fail to learn from them. A mistakes is a glorious gift when it makes us wiser.
Blaming Others Hurts You
Blaming other people is a futile waste of energy. Always take extreme responsibility. Hold yourself accountable. Accept yourself with all of your flaws. Never be in denial, never rationalise. Be ruthless in examining how you played a part in every bad event that happens in your life. Jocko Willink’s extreme accountability will change your life.
